Production from the southern oil fields has recently reached 1.1 million barrels a day, according to Jabbar Ali, head of the Southern Oil Company.

The rate is close to what the company produced before the war and is one of the latest success stories of an industry torn by wars and sabotage.

“It (the figure) is a great achievement and has come in record time,” Ali said.

He said the company had plans to further increase the output but he declined to give a figure.

Insurgents have recently directed their attacks on oil pipelines and installations but they have failed in efforts to harm the fields in Basra, currently the most prolific in the country.

“We work in silence and without fuss and are modest when it comes to successes,” Ali added.

“Our company has drawn plans to boost output and increase exports,” he said.

Insurgents have halted exports via the Iraqi-Turkish pipeline and the country now relies on export terminals at the head of the Gulf estimated at 1.4 million barrels a day.

Iraq used to export up to 2.5 million barrels a day before the U.S.-led war that toppled the regime of Saddam Hussein two years ago.
